Frontier domain — actively developing. Material Innovation is a relatively new area of exploration for PlaniN. We are conducting in-house research and are actively seeking material lab testing partners to validate engineering parameters reliably. Materials as a First Principles Problem
The construction industry uses the same materials it used decades ago — PlaniN is asking why

Construction is one of the largest industries in the world and one of the least materially innovative. Concrete, steel, brick and glass dominate a sector that has access to vastly better options — if the first-principles question is asked: what does this structural or surface element actually need to do, and what material combination does that best at minimum cost, weight and construction time?

PlaniN's material innovation work starts from the construction use case — a structural element, a surface, a joint, a road layer — and asks what the ideal material specification for that use case would be if we were not constrained by convention. The three streams we are currently working in are new concrete formulations, bamboo as a composite structural material, and novel bitumen-based applications.

Our research focus — Better performance. Lower cost. Faster construction. These are the three parameters we optimise for in every material innovation stream. In the Indian construction context, all three matter enormously — and conventional materials routinely underperform on all three when evaluated against first-principles alternatives.
Three Active Research Streams

New Concrete Types
Primary Stream
Conventional concrete is overspecified for most applications, underspecified for some, and carries significant embodied carbon, curing time and cost. PlaniN is researching concrete formulations that challenge these defaults — working on mix designs that deliver better structural performance, faster curing, lower cost or reduced material volume for specific construction use cases across buildings, infrastructure and roads.
  • Alternative mix designs for structural and non-structural applications
  • Faster curing formulations for speed-critical construction
  • Cost-optimised concrete for Indian construction contexts
  • Reduced-weight options for upper-floor and precast applications
  • High-durability formulations for infrastructure and road use
🌿
Bamboo Composites
Active Research
Bamboo is one of the highest strength-to-weight ratio materials available — faster growing than timber, abundant in India, and largely unexploited as an engineered composite in construction. PlaniN is exploring bamboo as a composite component for building materials across multiple use cases — structural, surface, reinforcement and panel applications — with a focus on engineering the material's natural variability out of the picture.
  • Bamboo composite panels for wall and floor applications
  • Bamboo reinforcement as a concrete and masonry alternative
  • Structural bamboo for low-rise and temporary construction
  • Bamboo-based precast components for rapid deployment
  • Engineered bamboo for furniture and interior structural uses
Bitumen-Based Innovations
Exploration Stage
Bitumen is primarily used in road construction today — but its properties make it potentially valuable in a wider range of construction applications if formulated correctly. PlaniN's in-house research is exploring novel bitumen-based material possibilities beyond conventional road surfacing — looking at modified bitumen formulations, composite applications and use cases where bitumen's waterproofing, binding and thermal properties create genuinely better solutions than current alternatives.
  • Modified bitumen formulations for non-road construction use cases
  • Bitumen composites for waterproofing and surface protection
  • Thermal and acoustic applications of modified bitumen layers
  • Novel road surfacing formulations for Indian climate conditions
Construction Applications We Are Targeting
Better, cheaper, faster alternatives across the construction value chain
Buildings
Structural Elements
Columns, beams, slabs and walls using new concrete or bamboo composite formulations that reduce weight, cost or construction time without compromising structural performance — designed to Indian standards and construction practices.
Roads
Road Surfaces & Sub-bases
New concrete and modified bitumen formulations for road construction that extend service life, reduce maintenance frequency and perform better in Indian climate conditions — particularly important for PlaniN's roads and highways domain expertise.
Precast
Precast & Prefabricated Components
Materials optimised for precast manufacturing — faster demoulding, lower weight, higher surface finish — enabling the precast construction model that PlaniN already uses in its highway interchange system to be extended into building construction.
Waterproofing
Waterproofing & Surface Protection
Novel bitumen and composite formulations for waterproofing of roofs, basements, podiums and infrastructure elements — with a focus on durability in Indian monsoon and heat conditions that current systems underperform in.
Low-Rise
Affordable & Rapid Housing
Material combinations optimised for the affordable housing segment — where cost per square foot, construction speed and local material availability are the dominant constraints. Bamboo composites and alternative concrete formulations are particularly relevant here.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure & Urban Systems
Materials for drainage structures, pedestrian infrastructure, retaining walls, utility corridors and other urban infrastructure elements — aligned with PlaniN's city infrastructure planning work and the specific durability and cost requirements of Indian urban construction.
We Are Seeking Partners
Material Innovation is an in-house research effort at PlaniN that is ready to move from concept to validated engineering parameters — and we need the right partners to do that properly.

If you are a testing lab, a materials research institution, a construction materials manufacturer or a university department working in concrete, composites, bamboo engineering or bitumen chemistry, we want to talk.

We bring the innovation thinking, the construction domain knowledge and the application context. You bring the testing infrastructure, materials science expertise and validation capability. Together we build the evidence base that takes these innovations into real construction projects.
🔬 Material Testing Laboratories
NABL-accredited or equivalent labs capable of structural, durability and performance testing for concrete, composites and bitumen formulations to IS and international standards.
🏫 Materials Research Institutions & Universities
IIT, NIT, CSIR and equivalent research institutions with materials science, civil engineering or construction technology departments — for joint research, validation and publication.
🏭 Construction Materials Manufacturers
Cement, concrete, bamboo product and bitumen manufacturers who want to co-develop new formulations — with PlaniN providing the innovation design and application context, and the manufacturer providing production capability and market access.
🏢 Developers & Contractors for Pilot Applications
Forward-looking developers or contractors willing to pilot validated material innovations in real construction projects — with appropriate technical oversight and performance monitoring.
Research Roadmap & What We Are Working Towards
Click any area to expand
Phase 1 — In-House Concept Development (Current) +

First-principles analysis of material properties and construction use cases. Identification of the specific performance parameters where conventional materials fall short. Formulation of research hypotheses for new concrete types, bamboo composites and bitumen applications. This phase is active and ongoing at PlaniN.

Phase 2 — Lab Testing & Parameter Validation (Seeking Partners) +

Rigorous testing of formulations and composites against structural, durability, thermal and environmental performance parameters. This requires accredited laboratory infrastructure that PlaniN is actively seeking partners to provide. The output of this phase is a validated engineering specification for each material innovation — the basis for construction application.

Phase 3 — Pilot Construction Application +

Deployment of validated material innovations in real construction projects — with performance monitoring, data collection and iterative refinement. PlaniN's existing relationships with developers, contractors and government bodies in urban planning and road construction create the pipeline for pilot applications once engineering validation is complete.

Phase 4 — Commercialisation & Manufacturer Partnership +

Following successful pilot applications, PlaniN will work with manufacturing partners to bring validated material innovations to commercial scale. This follows the same model as PlaniN's Product Innovation practice — PlaniN provides the innovation design and validation, the manufacturing partner brings production capability and market reach.
